Cross-Line Laser Levels

Cross-line lasers project two lines, one horizontal and one vertical, allowing you to extend a straight, level line and mark off perfectly perpendicular lines.  These versatile lasers are ideal for a variety of applications indoors and outdoors.  Cross-line laser levels are especially popular for hanging suspended ceilings, millwork, cabinetry, tile work, decking, and framing.

Most of the cross-line lasers on the market today are self-leveling, but some are not, so be sure to select a model that levels itself if that's an important feature for you.  On the other side of the coin - if you will need to mark custom slopes or angles - you'll want to select a model that has a manual override option to disable the self-leveling feature.  See our extensive cross-line laser level reviews for more information.

Rotary Laser Levels

Rotary lasers project a single laser that spins continually to project a level line 360° from the unit.  Rotary laser levels typically have a longer visible range than cross-line and single line lasers, with visibility regularly exceeding 50 feet and extending up to 100+ feet with a receiver or detector.

A rotary laser may be your best choice if you regularly work on projects where a level line is needed beyond 50 feet.  Rotary lasers are standard for machine-mounted control applications, municipal-scale leveling and excavating, and various outdoor construction projects where visibility is required at great distances in bright light.  We've done several laser level reviews on rotary lasers, and we hope you'll find them to be helpful and informative.

Single Line Laser Levels

Single line laser levels are the simplest (and least expensive) laser levels.  You level these simple tools manually, using traditional spirit levels that are incorporated into the body of the tool.  When you have the unit level, you switch the unit on and it projects a laser which allows you to extend your level line for several feet.

Single line lasers come in many different styles - some have suction cups to hold them in place; some have to be held in place with a tack; some are designed exactly like traditional torpedo levels with the laser built in to one or both sides.  Single line laser levels are popular for taping off paint lines, aligning hanging artwork on walls, and general woodworking.  Many of our laser level reviews cover single line lasers - see below for a quick overview.
