Dewalt DW089LG Review
The Dewalt DW089LG cross-line laser level is a top of the line laser with new features that bring some nice high-end functionality to Dewalt's product offering. With 3 lasers and support for Dewalt's standard 12-volt lithium ion battery, this innovative level helps Dewalt reach into the very high end of the market with a laser level that has already become very popular with professional contractors that specialize in indoor jobs.
The Dewalt DW089LG laser level has been awarded an IP65 enclosure rating - which means that it is dust tight and can withstand pressurized water spray. This laser's reputation is strong in the marketplace. Some buyers have reported manufacturing issues or shipping issues that caused the laser to be misaligned at the time of purchase, but those issues have been few and far between. For the most part, contractors who have had this laser out in the field for any amount of time report that the tool is reliable and durable.
If you use any other tools that require Dewalt's standard 12-volt rechargeable lithium-ion battery, you're in luck. The DW089LG accepts the standard 12-volt Dewalt battery, which slides easily in and out of the integrated mounting bracket. If this tool is your first Dewalt 12-volt tool, you would be well advised to pick up an extra battery right away. While there is a power level indicator, and the battery does have an impressive life when fully charged - the laser quits abrubtly when the power runs out. Pick up an extra battery if you don't already have one.
There are a few different factors that contribute to the Dewalt DW089LG's high-end price tag. Be sure to understand the features that you're paying for so that you don't spend more than you need to.
The biggest factors that set this laser apart from the rest of Dewalt's product line include the addition of a 3rd laser line, and the fact that all 3 of the laser lines project consistently at 360 degrees. A word to the wise: you can get those same features for a lower price with this laser's red sister model, the DW089LR.
The 360-degree projection that comes standard with the Dewalt DW089LG cross-line laser level can save you a lot of time transferring level from one surface to another. This feature alone may justify the cost of the laser if you intend to use it for cabinetry, ceilings, carpentry, framing, or other jobs that require a visual level across multiple surfaces.
The user interface couldn't be any simpler. There are no unnecessary switches or buttons (no bells and whistles to break). The housing includes a power level indicator, and a manual sliding lock to put the pendulum in a locked position when in storage or transit, which can extend the life and improve the accuracy of the self-leveling mechanisms.
The integrated rear-mounted magnetic bracket means you can easily mount the laser flush against any steel surface and most metal tracks, frames, and brackets. For some, this completely alleviates the need for additional mounting brackets, stands, or tripods. For others who need precision adjustments and/or frequent mobility, the Dewalt DW089LG cross-line laser level mounts easily to any standard 1/4-inch or 5/8-inch thread tripod or mounting bracket.
Items Included in Package
The most popular add-on for the Dewalt DW089LG is an extra battery (see above). If you don't already have extra Dewalt 12-volt lithiums on hand, you'll want to pick one up if you need continuous operation. The batteries do charge quickly, but it can be pretty frustrating to have one burn out when you're in the middle of hanging a cabinet. Besides the spare battery, you might also consider Dewalt's DW0881 tripod (this laser is also compatible with any other 1/4-inch or 5/8-inch mounting thread. Finally, if you work on big commercial projects, you might think about getting some green laser recognition glasses, a green laser card, or even a compatible sensor like Dewalt's DW0892G green laser detector.
With three perpendicular 360° lines, the Dewalt DW089LG cross-line laser level is ideal for full-room layout projects. This model is popular with ceiling installers, custom cabinetry carpenters, commercial framers, plumbers, and electricians. If you really only need one or two lines, keep looking - you can get that functionality for a lower cost in any of the red cross-line lasers we've reviewed on this site.
Pros & Cons
We're excited about the DW089LG. It shows the promise of second generation laser levels with rechargeable lithium-ion technology, and 360° project for three lines. If you're not sure about the size of the investment, keep in mind that Dewalt's warranty keeps you covered for three full years, and their service reps are notorious for speed and responsiveness.
The range is great out of the box, and with the compatible receiver no indoor project is too large. While the price tag might scare some buyers away - it is certainly a fair deal for all of the features Dewalt squeezed in to this small package.
We give the Dewalt DW089LG 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.
